Chandrasekaran to succeed Ramadorai as TCS chief
Tata Consultancy Services said on Tuesday that its current Chief Operating Officer (COO), Mr N. Chandrasekaran, will take over as Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director from October 6, 2009.
He will replace the 64-year-old Mr S. Ramadorai who has been with TCS since 1971 and has been its Managing Director and CEO since 1996. Mr Chandrasekaran, 45, was appointed COO of TCS 21 months ago and was also promoted as Executive Director. MphasiS Q2 net up at Rs 224 cr
Bangalore, May 21 The MphasiS Group, the Indian IT services subsidiary of Hewlett-Packard, reported a consolidated second quarter net profit of Rs 224.5 crore on revenues of Rs 1,048.5 crore aided by steady bill rates and a weak rupee. Net profit for the corresponding last quarter stood at Rs 70.3 crore on revenues of Rs 688.4 crore.
For the half-year ended April 2009, MphasiS recorded a net profit of Rs 434.5 crore on revenues of Rs 2,026.1 crore. The MphasiS scrip gained 4.4 per cent on the BSE to close at Rs 285.4 on Thursday.

Maintenance services now cash cow for IT vendors
As the current credit crunch is forcing IT clients to postpone the deployments of new technologies, Indian IT vendors are drawing more revenues from application maintenance services.
"Maintenance continues to be hot," said S. D. Shibulal, Chief Operating Officer, Infosys Technologies. "The new systems that clients were going to implement are delayed, which means there is more maintenance to be done," he added. Infosys has a new ticket-based pricing model for its maintenance services, where the customer is billed for the number of upkeep requests or the number of devices managed.

The contract is the extension of 13-year relationship Sunoco have with Infocrossing. Infocrossing has provided managed infrastructure outsourcing services to Sunoco since 1996, the company said in a release.

HP to cut 6,400 jobs
US computer giant Hewlett-Packard reported a 17-per cent fall in quarterly net profit and said it plans to cut two per cent of its workforce, or nearly 6,400 workers, over the next year.
HP said net profit fell to $1.7 billion, or 86 cents per share, in the second quarter of its fiscal year from $2.1 billion, or 87 cents per share, a year ago, in line with the expectations of Wall Street analysts.

Though India is hailed as a technology hub, when it comes to search engines, it is yet to churn out its own Google; a search engine, which will be India centric and will cater to the Indian market. Apart from Guruji.com, no search engines do a web search in India. All other search engines are like web directories. "Indian search engine war has just begun. I think Indian Google is in the making. We are trying to replicate like what Baidu has done in China," says Anurag Dod, CEO & Co-Founder, Guruji.com. Baidu is a search engine designed to cater the Chinese market. It has been successful in diverting the traffic from Google to its own search engine. Indian search engines would like to replicate the same success. Global offshore product development company, GlobalLogic India is witnessing a shift in its business from small to larger companies. Small companies contributed to 50 per cent of GlobalLogic’s businesses earlier.
AVP- business development, GlobalLogic India told Financial Chronicle that 60 per cent of the current inflow of jobs is from large companies. “The existing 60 per cent contribution from large enterprises is likely to grow to 65 per cent. Oracle cuts some support prices -- temporarily
Just a week after rival SAP AG revised its plan to raise support costs, Oracle Corp. announced plans to offer small, short-term discounts to large customers using older versions of its software.
The company last week said it will delay for a year or two -- depending on the application -- the 10% increase in support fees charged to customers transitioning from the premier support program to the extended plan. Customers are moved to the latter plan once the version of software they're using has been available for five years.

Global outsourcing market deal volume 7% lower in Q1
Global outsourcing market saw a seven per cent drop in transaction volumes in the first quarter of 2009 against the preceding quarter, according to Everest Research Institute. The global annual contract value (ACV) dropped 16 per cent to $2.97 billion during the period.
According to the latest ‘Market Vista: Q1 2009 report’ on global outsourcing and offshoring activity tracked by Everest, the transaction volumes in the BPO space fell 15 per cent.
“Revenues of offshore-centric suppliers registered a 2.3 per cent decline, while those of traditional global suppliers declined by 2.2 per cent,” Mr Nikhil Rajpal, Principal, Everest Group, said.

The IT major will support all the brands — Audi, SEAT, Å koda, Volkswagen Passenger Cars and Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles — within the group as they move to a consolidated, standardised business platform. Patni Computer looks to enter the big league
IT services firm Patni Computer Services wants to move into the league of top five Indian software providers that will give it an access to bigger contracts and projects.
The company will evaluate acquisitions in the areas of business process outsourcing and infrastructure management services , CEO Jeya Kumar said. However, considerations for acquisitions will be intellectual property and not scale, said Mr Kumar.
MindTree plans to invest $20.5 mn in '09-10
MindTree, an IT solution company, is planning to invest around $20.5 million (Rs 102 crore) towards capital expenditure this year in 2009-10. The company is also planning to set up a new facility in Bhubaneswar.
At the Emerge Out Conclave 2008, organized by NASSCOM in Chennai, MindTree said the proposed investment of $20.5 million is up from $11.5 million last year. The investment will be towards creating additional facilities in Chennai and Bangalore
March numbers spur MindTree
The stock rose 21 per cent to Rs 305.50 in the three trading sessions last week on strong profit growth during the quarter ended March 2009. Its consolidated net profit jumped 115.6 per cent to Rs 18.80 crore over the sequential quarter ended December 2008.
The small-cap stock has outperformed the market over the past one month, gaining 49 per cent compared to a 19 per cent gain in the Sensex. The current price of Rs 305 discounts its earning per share of Rs 13.84 for the year ended March 2009 by 22.03 times. Compared to this, Infosys is available at P/E of 14.42, TCS at 11.60 and Wipro at 12.41, based on their EPS for the year ended March 2009.
